Michael Johnson
Michael Johnson serves as the Marshall County Revenue Commissioner, bringing decades of experience in technology, administration, and public service to the office. A lifelong resident of Boaz, Alabama, Michael has spent his career using his expertise in information systems and management to improve government efficiency and serve the people of Marshall County.
Michael is a graduate of Auburn University, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration specializing in Management Information Systems. He also completed pre-pharmacy studies at Snead State Community College before transferring to Auburn. Throughout his career, he has continued professional development through specialized programs offered by the Alabama Department of Revenue and the Alabama Tax Administrators Association.
Before entering public service, Michael worked as a programmer, systems analyst, and technology specialist, including roles with the Auburn University Alumni Association, IBM, and the North Slope Borough in Alaska. His work included designing database and accounting systems, managing computer infrastructure, developing software, supporting financial operations, and assisting with complex property assessments.
Michael later served as Director of the Albertville Senior Center, where he oversaw community programs, transportation services, meal programs for seniors, and staff operations while building strong relationships with the citizens the center served.
For the past 12 years as Marshall County Revenue Commissioner, Michael has led significant improvements to the office, including modernizing computer systems, implementing online payment options, increasing operational efficiency, and maintaining strong financial oversight. Under his leadership, the office successfully regained full operational control after more than two decades under the Alabama Department of Revenue and has maintained consistently strong audits from the State Examiner’s Office. He has also worked with local governments and schools on special projects and successfully defended the public interest before the Alabama Supreme Court, earning a unanimous decision.
Michael and his wife Kay McElrath Johnson of Albertville have been married for 40 years. In addition to his professional work, Michael has long enjoyed tutoring students, especially in mathematics, and serving his community whenever possible.
